The Mediterranean coast lies about 20 miles west of the city center. Within the metropolitan area are the seven Palatine Palaces, Capitol, Quirinal, Esquiline, Viminal, Aventine and Caelius, the Palatine being the origin of the town, where the oldest finds were made.
