Rome is situated in the river plain of the Tiber and is bordered to the south by the Albanian mountains, to the east by the Abruzzi and to the north-east by the Sabine mountains. The Mediterranean coast lies about 20 miles west of the city center. Within the metropolitan area are the seven Palatine Palaces, Capitol, Quirinal, Esquiline, Viminal, Aventine and Caelius, the Palatine being the origin of the town, where the oldest finds were made.
